Those killed in pointless wars, member of utterly harmless movements that the police infiltrated (ruining the lives of their activists), sex workers (hardly ever defended against violent clients- whose activities are made easier by prohibition anyway) and the innumerable victime of the failed war on drugs think otherwise.Libertariannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9172766774137902766.post-26566062757121772762014-01-20T01:15:12.871+00:002014-01-20T01:15:12.871+00:00An excellent essay, Mr Cooke.

For example, how could we have armed forces for our collective security without contributions from the collective population? If these forces were paid for by only a very few wealthy individuals, those individuals would 'own' the security forces. Who then would be able to stop those forces being used against the general population or to impose tyranny?
------
I think that the recent disenchantment which is causing ordinary people to 'cheat' as much as they possibly can is what they perceive as massive waste of the money which they provide via taxes. People have not forgotten 'the expenses scandal' - it is real and still 'now'. Further, people see that 'global warming' was and is a fraud, and yet the government is still forcing us to subsidise windmills. The people cannot but observe massive costs being incurred via funding for quack professors and quack doctors in universities, and the army of paid propagandists, which politicians actually support! Your post of a couple of days ago about teachers being obliged to teach 'lifestyles' rather than maths and such is a case in point.
There are taxes which most people cannot avoid - levied via PAYE, but there are stacks of taxes which people CAN avoid. How can you blame them for avoiding paying for crooks and charlatans? In the end, the only way to get rid of the crooks and charlatans is to de-fund them.
